No travel budget this year? Well, forget the cost of a hotel and flight and take a staycation. Below are the Top 10 ideas that Bryan Link, CEO of Winston-Salem, NC based – suggests people can do this staycation season.

  1. Tubing: Live near water? Get on it…literally! Find a local tubing company, meet them at their drop off point and float away. Your family will enjoy a relaxing ride and you can get some sun while you’re at it.
  2. In-Town Hotel or Bed and Breakfast: You don’t have to leave town to enjoy the luxury of spending the night under someone else’s roof. Book a room at a hotel or bed and breakfast in your city and experience the scene in a whole new way.
  3. Museum: With exhibits changing by the season, your local museum is sure to provide hours of entertainment for the whole family. Make a day of it by finding a nearby restaurant to skip to for lunch.
  4. Picnic at a Park: Pack up a blanket, secure snacks and have some old-fashioned fun. This easy to accomplish idea will encourage you to enjoy the outdoors and each other.
  5. Hike: Exercise and excitement! This family-friendly activity can be scaled based on skill level and courses can be chosen based on how long you’d like to nurture the nature-lover in you.
  6. Scavenger Hunt: Pre-planning involves writing quick clues and planting playful prizes, but once that’s done you can set your kids off for an afternoon of fun. Station adults along the trail to keep time.
  7. Bike Ride: Rent bikes (if you don’t own them) and get ready to ride. Head to a local park (the bigger the sidewalks the better) and make sure to pack helmets!
  8. Camp Out in your Backyard: Pitch a tent, roll out sleeping bags and start a fire (in a pit, preferably). Next on your checklist? Chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers. Yum!
  9. Spa: Make pampering part of your plan by booking a treatment or two at your local spa. Check for weekday specials or partner with a friend and purchase a package.
  10. Fishing: Wade into shallow water (rain boots are perfect for keeping dry), cast your rod and wait. Local bait shops will have the best tips on the catch of the day in your area.
