Swaptree.com Offers a Cost-Effective Swap Site with a Conscience

by News Guy on August 3, 2010

Millions of Books, CDs, DVDs, and Video Games Available

While bartering for goods has occurred since the beginning of time, a new consumer trend is emerging as people look to save money and reduce their environmental footprint – by swapping their stuff online.

Leading the way in the online swap movement is Swaptree.com, which gives consumers the option to trade in books, CDs, DVDs and video games they already have for items they actually want. There is no money exchanged as swappers pay only for shipping (generally under $3), so the site represents an enormous opportunity for cost-savings, versus buying the products off the shelf.  (It’s also great for clearing out the old stuff that’s just collecting dust around your house.)

Once registered on the site, members set up a “have” list and a “want” list. Then, the site’s two- and three-way trade algorithms instantly find all of the items members can receive in exchange for the items they “have.” Unlike traditional online trading websites, which typically focus on one type of media, Swaptree.com allows for cross-media trades. So, you can trade in your summer reads for a Madden NFL game, or swap a CD you’re totally sick of for the latest John Grisham.

Referred to as “the eBay of Swap” by mainstream media outlets, Swaptree.com provides an easy, feel good way for people to recycle the stuff they have and get things they want. In 2009 alone, Swaptree.com members conducted more than 1 Million swaps on the site; saved members $5,549,058; and enabled members to reduce their carbon footprint by 5,011,078 pounds, in total.

Thanks for the information about this … seems like a really useful option & way to clean up the house! I’ve used freecycle a lot in the past (& of course eBay as well) but its always good to have another option available. Unfortunately looking at the site, it hasn’t currently launched in the UK, but hopefully it will be soon.

Oh yeah, if I weren’t so lazy myself I’d totally check out some of these too! :) Esp Freecycle. One day perhaps.
