Computerworld ranks financial services firm for the military No. 1

SAN ANTONIO – If you’re looking for the best place to work in the Information Technology field, you won’t find it in Silicon Valley. It isn’t even a software developer or technology company. According to Computerworld, the leading technology news source, the best place to work in the IT field is USAA, a member-based financial services group headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, that serves the military and their families.

“It’s a benefits bonanza [at USAA], but IT workers also enjoy expansive career options and limitless prospects for innovation” say Computerworld. “IT workers say [the company’s] focus on innovation, the breadth of technical and managerial career opportunities, and the relative ease with which they can change roles – to learn new skills, change professional direction or give their career a boost – all contribute to a loyalty to USAA.”

“This recognition is special because our employees are passionate about the work they do every day,” says USAA CIO Greg Schwartz. “Technologies come and go, but winning the hearts and minds of our IT workforce to create innovative solutions that make our members lives easier makes USAA a great place to work.”

The Computerworld Rankings

Since 1994, Computerworld’s annual “Best Places to Work in IT” feature has ranked the top 100 work environments for technology professionals, based on a comprehensive questionnaire regarding company offerings in categories such as benefits, diversity, career development, training and retention.

“To be among the Best Places to Work in IT, it’s not enough just to seek out and hire the most talented IT people, offer them competitive pay and provide great benefits,” said Scot Finnie, editor in chief of Computerworld. “The organizations that made this year’s ‘Best Places to Work’ list sustain a dynamic work environment in which IT professionals keep their hands on the latest technologies and work on projects that are business critical, and for 2010, USAA is tops on Computerworld’s ranking of Best Places to Work in IT.”

USAA Hiring IT Employees

USAA is always looking to hire the best and brightest – both recent college graduates and experienced professionals – for its IT positions, and offers many opportunities for career advancement. The average tenure among USAA’s IT workforce is 10.5 years.

“When we recruit for IT, we talk to prospective hires about a career, not just a job,” added Schwartz, who joined USAA as a programmer right out of college and has been with USAA 28 years. “At USAA, we have a unique mission – to serve the military and their families – and we look for outstanding IT employees who embrace that mission. We’re excited that this “Best Places,” honor will help us spread the word even further about why being a part of our team is so special.”
